Premium vs. Regular Gas

Pumping Gas

What is the difference between regular and premium gas? About 50 cents per gallon. But seriously, how do you know which type of gas is right for your car? The service department at Serra Cadillac Of Traverse City wants to help you keep your car running smoothly on our Traverse City roads for years to come, and that means filling its tank with the correct type of gas. That’s why we’ve put together the regular vs. premium gas comparison below so that you can know which kind of gasoline is right for your vehicle.

Premium Gas vs. Regular – The Differences

Just about every Manistee driver will notice that there is a difference between premium and regular gas when it comes to price. The other significant difference has to do with the octane content, which we explain below. Here are the differences explained:

Regular vs. Premium Gas – Price and Octane

  • Octane: Regular gas has an octane rating of 87, while premium has an octane of 92. This accounts for the slower burn.
  • Price: Premium gas is the pricier option, as there can sometimes be a .60 difference between premium and regular gas at some Cadillac gas stations.

Premium vs. Regular Gas – Which One Should You Use?

You may be thinking that the more expensive option is surely the better option for your car. After all, you get what you pay for, right? Not so fast. If your car’s engine is designed for regular gas, using premium will not increase performance at all, and would therefore be a waste of money. On the other hand, using regular gas in engines designed for the slower burn of premium gas can cause serious damage. So, look for the label inside your fuel door or in your owner’s manual to see which type your car was designed for. If you can’t locate this information, our service department would be happy to help.
