Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

If you’ve discovered that there are no issues that need to be addressed, you can perform a manual reset of your check engine light in your own driveway. If you’re not a seasoned DIYer, the process may seem daunting. However, you can learn how to reset a check engine light in just a few steps:

  1. Turn off your vehicle. Next, put on safety glasses and gloves.
  2. Find the negative terminal. Generally, it will have a black cap and a negative (–) symbol.
  3. Remove the nut on the negative terminal with a wrench. Pull the negative connector from the battery. Keep it aside for 30 – 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the negative cable and secure it with your wrench.

At this point, your check engine light should be reset. If it’s not, you may want to try our next trick. Keep in mind that disconnecting your battery may reset your infotainment system!

Check Your Gas Cap

Sometimes, something as simple as a loose or cracked gas cap can set off your check engine light. When your gas cap is faulty, fumes will escape and cause your check engine light to click on. Find a safe spot to park and simply tighten your gas cap. You’ll also want to inspect for damage. If your check engine light goes off right after trying this method, then you’ve found the culprit!
