Like many of the greatest companies, Cadillac history starts with humble beginnings. From a simple sketch, the history of Cadillac would go on to change the automotive landscape forever. Today, our team will give a brief overview of the history of Cadillac, the Cadillac logo history, and more. Read on to answer questions like “What was the first Cadillac ever made?” and “When was Cadillac founded?” with our expert staff!

When Was Cadillac Founded?

Cadillac history goes back all the way to the turn of the twentieth century when a man named Henry Leland started his automotive business. So, when was Cadillac founded? Cadillac was established in 1902, gaining its name from the founder of Detroit, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac.

After only six years in business, Cadillac brought the idea of interchangeable parts to the automobile industry. This ground-breaking revolution altered the future of automotive production forever. Thanks to this breakthrough, Cadillac became the first American car to win the Dewar Trophy from the Royal Automobile Club of England. Due to this accolade, Cadillac adopted the slogan “Standard of the World.”

What Was the First Cadillac Ever Made?

As stated above, the Cadillac company dates back to 1902, but what was the first Cadillac ever made? The first Cadillac produced was the Runabout in 1902. This 2-seater “horseless carriage” was powered by a 10 hp single-cylinder engine. The Runabout debuted at the 1903 New York Auto Show and was priced at $850. Shortly after, the Runabout became the Model A. From there, the Model B added an extended front and a transverse front suspension in 1904.

The Cadillac Logo History

At the beginning of the Cadillac logo history, inspiration was drawn from the coat of arms of Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. This French adventurer founded Detroit and his legacy was embodied by Cadillac. Over the past 100 years, the Cadillac logo has undergone 30 different transitions. Here are some of the highlights that mark the renditions seen on the Grayling streets throughout the years:

  • 1906: The crest was divided into a coat and shield. The shield was a symbol of the Cadillac family’s royal heritage. The birds, or merlettes, won’t be seen on the crest today.
  • 1920: This version incorporated a tulip-bulb wreath from the original trademark and featured nine points on the crown. The crown reverted to seven points until 1925.
  • 1933: In order to match the brand’s theme, the crest was given wings.
  • 1957: This is when the long and wide structure of the crest took shape. This style was continued until 1959 when the crown was almost completely removed.
  • 1963-Today: The modern logo derives from this iteration, only being changed to match the subtle aesthetic adjustments of the brand from time to time.
